Sports Pro Magazine has published a list of The World’s 50 Most Marketable Athletes.
We thought it might be fun to see how this list of 50 sports-stars compared on Facebook, so we did a little bit of analysis.
The usual caveats apply. Facebook more popular in some countries than others. Athletes who compete as part of teams probably won’t do as well on Facebook as those who compete as individuals. The Sports Pro list is looking forwards, while Facebook fans can be a reflection of past success.. etc etc.
This is a blog post, not a piece of rigourous research, so there might be some mistakes. We haven’t added together multiple pages, just taken the largest page by likes using Facebook’s search results upon typing the name of the athlete. If we’ve missed a page, then let us know.
We’re not going to editorialise too much about it, but we offer this data to kick off some discussion. Enjoy.
